How to Make the Most of Shorter Days

Tips for you and your elderly relative to make the most of the increasingly shorter days

As we approach the winter solstice, the days become increasingly shorter, only to lengthen again after the solstice and only having more daylight hours than night hours from spring onwards. This, in turn, can cause seasonal depression in people, characterized by several factors such as lack of concentration, fatigue, bad mood, irritability, and a significant increase in appetite, especially for sweet foods.

This depression can affect both those who spend the day working and those who spend the day alone at home, as is the case for many elderly people. Therefore, it is very important, when you notice any of the aforementioned signs, whether in yourself or your elderly relative, to find ways to combat seasonal depression.

Make the most of the sunlight

Fully open the blinds, shutters, and/or curtains on your windows to let in the sunlight. Also, wake up as early as possible to make the most of the daylight, and whenever you’re sitting doing something, try to sit as close to a window as possible. Sunlight is also very useful for warming the house. If it’s not too cold outside, it’s also a good idea to open the windows, even if only for a while, for fresh air to circulate.

Take a walk outside

Going for a walk is not only good for getting fresh air but it’s also good for keeping your body active. It’s important to first make sure the weather is good and to dress warmly. If you can’t leave the house, stretching is also a good activity to keep your body active without requiring strenuous physical effort.

Have a good diet

Eat healthy, warm, and/or seasonal foods, such as seasonal fruits and vegetables, soup, and tea. Try to resist the urge to eat sugary foods.

Talk with the people you love most

Isolation can be both a cause and an effect of seasonal depression. Therefore, it’s important to stay in touch with the people you love most, whether it’s a simple phone call or planning an activity together. One of these people could be your elderly relative. You can keep that relative company and motivate them to adopt the methods mentioned.
