Preparations for the Winter

Measures to help your elderly relative combat the impending cold.

The arrival of autumn means the cold of winter is just around the corner. This is the ideal time to prepare your elderly relative for the discomfort of cold days.

More specifically, flu is particularly harmful for this age group because it weakens the immune system, increasing the risk of serious complications such as pneumonia, dehydration, and exacerbation of chronic diseases (heart, lung, diabetes).

In order to improve the quality of life of the elder person during winter, you can:

Give them the flu and COVID vaccines

The flu vaccine significantly reduces the risk of contracting the disease, the severity of symptoms, and the likelihood of serious complications. It is free for people aged 60 and over and can be taken starting in October.

Verify the general state of windows and doors that lead outside

Check that all the doors are securely closed and that there are no gaps or damage that could allow air from the outside to enter. If any gaps are found, it is recommended that they be sealed with suitable material (e.g., weatherstrip or door seals) to prevent cold and/or humid air from entering from the outside.

Verify the general state of winter clothes

Help your elderly relative check their warm clothing, as clothes worn out by time and washing are warm up less. Ensure the elderly person has a cozy robe and a couch blanket for colder days. Ensure your family member always wears several layers of clothing when leaving the house to cope with temperature fluctuations. A scarf is essential for colder or windier days.

Fight inactivity

During cold weather, it’s normal for seniors to spend more time at home and be less active. To counter this trend, you can take advantage of fitness programs, such as Porto Canal, which offers a daily “Treino em Casa” program.

Keep the house well aired

By opening windows daily, the elder person improves air quality, preventing allergies and respiratory illnesses. It also eliminates odors, moisture, and microorganisms, such as dust mites and mold, which thrive in closed environments. Daily ventilation also contributes to a more comfortable environment, helping to regulate temperature, extend the lifespan of fabrics, and reduce bacterial growth.

Fight loneliness

Winter results in loneliness because the elder person will stay home, protected from the cold and rain. It’s essential to talk to friends and family on the phone during this time. If the elder person has a smartphone with data access, they can make video calls so everyone can see each other.

Prevent house fires

During winter, it’s common to use appliances to keep the home warm and comfortable. Regularly check your home’s electrical system, avoid overloading outlets, use power strips instead of T-strips, and replace obsolete or damaged appliances.
